Based within the Nuffield Department of Population Health, The Ethox Centre is an internationally recognised multidisciplinary bioethics research centre and is a vibrant and intellectually exciting place to work. We are seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow to join the Oxford BRC (Biomedical Research Centre) Ethics group and the Clinical Informatics and Big Data Cross-cutting theme at Ethox.

You will play a leading role in developing, delivering and evaluating an ethically robust governance framework for capture, application and management of consents, information sharing and transparency within and across organisations. You will also provide support to the BRC and undertake research in ethics and governance across the Trust.

You will have, or be nearing completion of a PhD/DPhil (in ethics, law, bioethics or a related field) and have a research record appropriate to career stage and evidenced by relevant publications. You will also have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary team.

The post is full-time (part time considered) and fixed-term for 3 years.

The Institute of Nursing Science (INS) of the Department Public Health at the University of Basel invites applications for a position of a post-doctoral fellow to join the Building Research Initiative Group: Chronic Illness Management and Adherence in Transplantation (BRIGHT) Research Group and the Psychosocial Interest research Group (PSIG) of the Swiss Transplant Cohort Study (STCS). The BRIGHT study is an externally funded international research project studying behavioral and health system outcomes in solid organ transplantation. The STCS is funded through the Swiss National Science Foundation and is a national cohort study including a comprehensive dataset of biomedical, psychosocial, behavioral and genetic data from pre-transplant to up to 9 years post-transplant. The successful candidate will be part of the interdisciplinary international research group analyzing the data of these 2 studies as well as participate in the preparation and execution of planned intervention studies.

Your tasks
The successful candidate is expected to:
– Participate in the analysis and dissemination of the BRIGHT and STCS data.
– Develop your own research projects using existing BRIGHT & STCS data.
– Participate in the planning and execution of intervention studies.
– Acquire external research funding.
– Participate in teaching in the Master in Nursing Science and PhD Health Sciences curriculum.

Your profile
– PhD in Nursing Science, Public Health, Medicine, Health Economics or another field of the health sciences.
– Experience in the field of transplantation and behavioral/psychosocial science is desirable.
– Sound knowledge of basic office (e.g. Word, PowerPoint) programs.
– Sound methodological and statistical skills and knowledge of statistical analysis software such as R, SAS or SPSS.
– Proficiency of German or willingness to learn German in a short term.
– Excellent oral and written English skills.
– Outcome oriented, a good team player, able to meet deadlines and be stress resistant.

Penn Fellowship in Advanced Biomedical Ethics

The Department of Medical Ethics and Health Policy at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine invites applications for a new postdoctoral Fellowship in Advanced Biomedical Ethics, beginning in September 2013.  The mission of this 2-year Fellowship is to train scholars and future leaders in academic biomedical ethics.

Fellows will participate fully in the life of the Department of Medical Ethics and Health Policy, which is among the world’s leading bioethics departments.  They will have full access to the intellectual resources of the larger Penn community.

The core fellowship experience will consist of:

  1. Mentored research:  Working with one or more faculty mentors, Fellows will be expected to conduct original research that will lead to the publication of a minimum of 2 manuscripts in top-tier peer-reviewed journals.
  2. Master of Science in Medical Ethics:   Fellows will undertake a 2-year program of study that will lead to a Master of Science in Medical Ethics (MSME) degree.  Coursework will include core topics in medical ethics (4 courses), a grounding in empirical research methods (4 courses), as well research-related electives.
  3. Department seminars:  Fellows will participate in and lead regular department seminars, including sessions devoted to works-in-progress, presentations by department and affiliated faculty as well as by invited scholars, and journal clubs devoted to critical analysis of conceptual and empirical articles in bioethics.
  4. Ethics committee, consultation, and institutional review board experience:  Consistent with their interests, Fellows will join an ethics committee and/or an institutional review board at a Penn-affiliated hospital and will participate in consultations, protocol reviews and other committee activities.

Applications are invited from scholars with doctoral degrees in hand (PhDs or equivalent, JDs, MDs), or who will have received such degrees by September 2013.  Doctorates may be in any relevant field, including but not limited to philosophy, political science, psychology, sociology, economics or anthropology.

Fellows will receive an annual stipend, benefits, and full tuition for coursework required for the MSME degree.

“The Petrie-Flom Center for Health Law Policy, Biotechnology and Bioethics at Harvard Law School Seeks Distinguished Candidates for Academic Fellowship Program.

PURPOSE: The Petrie-Flom Center is an interdisciplinary research program at Harvard Law School dedicated to scholarly research at the intersection of law and health policy, including issues of health care financing and market regulation, biomedical research and bioethics. The Academic Fellowship is a postdoctoral program specifically designed to identify, cultivate and promote promising scholars early in their careers. Fellows are selected from among recent graduates, young academics and mid-career practitioners who are committed to spending two years at the Center pursuing publishable research that is likely to make a significant contribution to the field of health law policy, medical innovation policy or bioethics. Our prior fellows have found employment as law professors at Harvard, UC Berkeley, BU, UCLA, Cornell and the University of Arizona.

PROGRAM: Petrie-Flom fellowships are full-time, two-year residential appointments starting in the summer of 2013. Fellows devote their full time to scholarly activities in furtherance of their individual research agendas. The Center does not impose teaching obligations on fellows, though in appropriate cases voluntary teaching opportunities may be made available. In addition to pursuing their research and writing, fellows are expected to attend and participate in research workshops on health law, bioethics, and biotechnology, and other events designated by the Center. Fellows are also expected to help plan and execute a small number of events in their field of expertise during their tenure, and to present their research in at least one of a variety of forums, including academic seminars, speaker panels, or conferences. Finally, the Center also relies on fellows to provide opportunities for interested students to consult with them about their areas of research, and to directly mentor our Student Fellows.

STIPEND AND BENEFITS: Fellows have access to the full range of resources offered by Harvard University. The Center provides each fellow with a private office, a research budget, and a stipend of $60,000 per full year.

ELIGIBILITY: Applicants must hold an advanced degree in a discipline that they intend to apply to issues relating to health law policy, biomedical research or bioethics. The Center particularly encourages applications from those who intend to pursue careers as law professors, but will consider any applicant who demonstrates an interest and ability to produce outstanding scholarship at the intersection of law and health policy, bioethics, or biotechnology during the term of the fellowship. Job: Research Associate at the Centre of Medical Law and Ethics, King’s College London

We are seeking a Research Associate to work with Professor Rosamund Scott (King’s College London) and Professor Stephen Wilkinson (Lancaster University) on a Wellcome Trust funded programme entitled The Donation and Transfer of Human Reproductive Materials.  The post-holder will be based at King’s College London, in the Centre of Medical Law and Ethics, and will work under the direction and supervision of Professor Scott.

The role will facilitate and advance the research programme’s aims and outputs.  The post-holder will be expected to work flexibly in a number of different areas to achieve this.  He or she will work predominantly on legal, international, and ‘horizon scanning’ aspects of the programme, but will also be required to engage with the relevant ethical issues.

The Centre of Medical Law and Ethics, within the Dickson Poon School of Law, is a leading academic centre of research and teaching in medical law and ethics, the first in the United Kingdom.

The Research Associate will be required to: produce independent research and publications; support the research of the programme leaders; organise academic meetings; and contribute to the work of the team in a variety of other ways.  Further details can be found in the Job Description.

Postdoctoral fellowship: UCLA Centre for Society and Genetics

The UCLA Center for Society and Genetics (CSG) will provide one or two postdoctoral fellowships for candidates with an outstanding record whose scholarly work contributes to the Center, which studies the co-evolution of society and genetics. We especially encourage novel approaches to the possibilities and tensions created by genetics for the individual and society.

Some themes central to our interests include Epigenetics and Epigenomics; Bioethics and Public Science Policy; Medical Genetics and Public Health; Population Genetics and History (and the nexus of studies of human genetics, archeology, linguistics, history and culture), Evolutionary Biology, Culture and Behavior; and Historical and Social Studies of Science.

All fellows are expected to actively participate in the life of the Center:  to attend the Center Colloquium series; to attend the fortnightly fellows’ meetings and make at least one formal presentation; to teach two seminars per year; and to produce scholarly works.

The salary for each position is competitive and includes health insurance, plus $1500 conference fees and other research expenses. Salary will be determined based on experience and percent time of the position.

Postdoctoral Bioethics Research Fellowship with an Emphasis on Food Ethics

A postdoctoral position in bioethics with a particular emphasis on ethics and food is available at Penn State starting August, 2011. The position is funded by the Rock Ethics Institute and will support research led by Jonathan Marks, Director of the Bioethics and Medical Humanities Program at Penn State University Park, in collaboration with a variety of colleagues across the university. The position is for one year with a good possibility of re-funding.

The Rock Ethics Institute hosts a series of initiatives in the area of bioethics including food ethics, and we are particularly interested in fostering interdisciplinary policy-relevant work in macro-bioethics. Our research agenda includes attention to ethical issues arising from industry sponsorship of health-related food research, nutrition education and practice, as well as issues of food safety and security. The research on industry sponsorship is being conducted pursuant to a collaborative project with the Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics at Harvard University. The applicant must hold a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline or a relevant professional degree at the time of the appointment. The ideal candidate will have a solid track record of interdisciplinary research. The successful candidate will work with scholars from a variety of disciplines (including law, philosophy, science studies, nutrition, and food science) and will pursue original research in bioethics and food ethics. In particular, she or he will pursue research and assist in the organization of a workshop related to the collaborative project on the ethical implications of industry sponsorship, and she or he may be invited to participate in the editing of a volume of papers presented at or arising from the workshop. She or he may also participate in grant-writing and in the generation or review of scholarly Web-based materials related to both bioethics and food ethics. There may also be opportunities to teach.
