Role of Council members, time commitment and expenses
The Council is a deliberative body that drives the intellectual function of the organisation. Council members decide on the future work programme and select new topics, scrutinise and ensure the quality of the Council’s work, and make decisions on the direction, function and membership of the organisation.
Our members usually attend about 6 meetings a year. In addition to quarterly meetings and an annual ‘Forward Look’ seminar, members will be invited to attend a number of further events such as workshops to explore possible future topics and meetings with the French and German national bioethics organisations. There may also be the possibility of being appointed to a working party, in which case the number of meetings would increase.
The quarterly meetings do involve some preparation as there are a number of papers to read, including draft Council reports.
Council members do not receive remuneration, but reasonable travel expenses are paid.
